Various news sources report that America's major broadcast television networks CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox have decided to lay their usual competition thinking aside and unite for an industry-wide network telethon to raise funds for relief efforts following the recent terrorist attacks in New York and Washington D.C.
The simultaneously aired two-hour show called "America: A Tribute To Heroes" will run commercial-free on Friday, 21 September 2001, from 9:00 to 11:00 pm ET/CT. The event will be made available to many other broadcast and cable networks and also radio stations. WB, UPN, E!, MTV and VH1 have been reported to also carry the telethon. Even a Webcast may take place.
According to a joint press release of the four networks, the live event will "raise funds and raise the spirits of all who have been touched by the horrific tragedy that has struck America."
The participating stars include Jim Carrey, George Clooney, Bruce Springsteen, Paul Simon, Billy Joel, Clint Eastwood, Stevie Wonder, Tom Hanks, Robert De Niro, Tom Cruise, Tom Petty, Julia Roberts, Neil Young, Bon Jovi, Cameron Diaz, Sheryl Crow, Faith Hill, Conan O'Brien, Will Smith, Robin Williams, Sela Ward, Calista Flockhart, Amy Brenneman, Dennis Franz, Kelsey Grammer, Dixie Chicks and Ray Romano so far. More names are being added almost by the hour.
There have been rumors that Carrey may even host the show, but so far we can't confirm this.
