doing time on MAPLE DRIVE..........

Postby fluffy » Sun Jul 10, 2005 12:51 pm

I watched this again last night, and was really blown away at the standard of Jims performance.........even back in the early days, he was capable of wiping out the rest of the screen...(see batman.... ).............

In his character portrayal he manages to be this weakened, broken individual, and yet, still have enormous strength, dignity and passion........
he acts them all off the screen..........

any thoughts folks........................?

Yeah, I have a thought. I wouldn't mind seeing that.

I am the world's lamest fan. I haven't seen "The Mask" either.

yeah but i do think, despite the fact that all 3 kids have a story line, it was heavily weighted towards the 'pretty' gay guy.......
but back in the 80's, it was kinda breaking the barriers to have gay folk even on the telly....(unless they were as camp as liberace or Freddy Mercury....lol)
But even though Jim's role was smaller it actually seems so much bigger......his primary scene is amazingly well acted........and subsequent pieces....such as the speech are also very powerful............
He's like this shadow in the background of every scene casting judgement on the parents.........despite his weaknessess he has an amazing sense of wisdom, acceptance and life..................
it's an exceptional early serious performance........

there!...........i got it off my chest........lol

chesty westy

fluffy is right. It was a made for TV movie for Fox, about the same time In Living Color was on (same network). I know the Lifetime TV Network owns the airing rights to it now, that's how I saw it. (http://www.lifetimetv.com/movies/info/move1873.html)

It was the first mainstream prime time movie that dealt with the discrimination of what a gay person has to deal with. Usually gays were either portrayed as flamboyant, cross-dressing queens or letcherous child molesters. It's the first movie I remember seeing gays portrayed as actual people.

Jim was so great in that, he played the disgruntled alcoholic so well. Although the film is dated and cheesy at times, Jim's performance really stole the few scenes he was in.
