Cable Guy (theater experience)When I first saw the trailer for "The Cable Guy", I thought it would be funny to watch a lonely cable repairman's attempt at making friends. But when I saw the movie, I had no idea the tone would be so dark and sinister. It freaked me out! And to think, this is a Ben Stiller flick...

Chip Douglas is not only lonely, but desperate. He goes too far as a blackmailer and scared the hell outta me as a stalker/would-be-killer. Everything about Chip is frightening: His lisp, his menacing voice, his singing along to the film's score, his determination to crush Steve and those glowing eyes from that nightmare sequence. Almost nobody in the audience understood or pity this evil character -- despite his negligence as a child -- and I was almost happy when he nearly died at the end.

Time after time, 2-3 people would get up and leave for the door during the movie. The remaining audience stayed, hoping it would get better. It didn't. Overall, the movie was just not funny, just plain corny. My friend and I didn't know when to laugh or what to think of this movie and we never really talked about it after (I asked "What didja think of the movie?", and she replied, "Uhh, It's ok... I guess.")
~^*TaKe KaRe NoW | BuH~BYe THeN*^~

Cable GuyI never saw Cable Guy in the theater (wasn't as big of a Jim fan yet).

However, when I finally saw it on video, I thought it was one of the funniest movies that Jim has ever done. Between the Medieval Times scene, the karaoke jam and the porno password, I couldn't stop laughing. Its definitely one of Jim's darkest roles, but that gives the humor its edge. Its one of the few movies (Dumb and Dumber is another), that gets funnier and funnier to me every time I watch it.

I never understood why people seemed to hate this movie so much. Its in my top 3 Jim Carrey movies of all time.

Nancy

Re: The Cable GuyI have to agree with Nancy.
What´s so scary about the movie? It´s different, it has dark aspects, but overall it´s so much fun, and Jim´s performance is more than fascinating. I guess you should just give it another try, because it does get better the more often you see it.
It´s actually my alltime fave JC movie because of the wonderful bathroom scene, the karaoke party and the Medieval Times fight - and because Jim acts so credible as psychopath. I also think Jim somehow looks extremely cute with that dark short hair, and... oh well, I better leave it with that.
I wish I had a friend like Chip Douglas! I love him. He is just different, that´s all.

Re: The Cable GuyActually, I thought that The Cable Guy was a great movie. Jim played a lonely psychopath incredibally well. And I agree with Pet Detective with Jim looking cute with the short black hair. He sure did, but he looks cute almost all the time neway I only managed to see this movie when it came on TV which was about 6 months ago, because I live over 2 hours away from the nearest video store, and the only way I get to see or tape Jim's movies is by watching them on TV. The rentals are only overnight or weekly, and we don't go to that town for about once every month. *sighs* Anyway, back to the subject, it was funny in most bits, with the end of the film with the fight between Steven and Chip being the best. Really, I don't see why people are getting up Jim for trying something new. I think it is great he was going into something that was serious and not Ace Ventura-like. He can perform serious parts very well and I congratulate him on the move.

Re: The Cable GuyThe Cable Guy is my favorite Jim Carrey film, to date, I love his other films too, but this one I agree gets better each time you watch it. I have to say, I never found Chip Douglas scary, I found him sinister, yes, but sad and ultimately pathetic, in a way that makes me feel more sympathetic for his character than Steven's. I also think The Cable Guy is hilarious, but then again I have a dark sense of humour, and never understand when my friends say they hate it. I love the scene in which they've just got back from the 'information super highway', in the van and Steven says he's ashamed that he doesn't know Chip's name, Chip says, " You really wanna know my name?" *Steven nods* "It's Ernie, Ernie Douglas, but my friends call me Chip." Then Chip turns to Steven and gives him this really freaky grin. (Which, to Chip is probably meant to be his winning charm, at work!) That makes me laugh my head off, because you know, it's just not normal, and if someone ever looked at me like that I'd run a mile, but it's so much subtler, than anything else Jim's done. It's moments like that in films that I love, the ones that we're not expecting, and don't have to be loud and outrageous to get out attention, to make us laugh or cry, and I'm ranting now aren't I, I'll stop. I'm glad there are some ppl on this board that also loved The Cable Guy as much as me. Just thought I'd say that, which is y I've dug up this post.

Fangz

Re: ThanxPeople who Say This Movie S**ks Dosent have a Sense of Humor. or they do but just dont use it on a JC Movie like this one.

I didnt see this movie in the theaters either I Saw it when it came out on tape. it was a good movie, I liked it.
