Me Myself & Irene

Postby Burned » Thu Jan 11, 2001 1:44 pm

Okay. I hesitated before starting a board about a movie I didn't like--but needed confirmation I guess.

Rented MM&I the day it came out. Took it back after 1 viewing. Didn't want my 12 year old son to see it.

It was just....crude. No point, no heart really, just crude. Not much of a vehicle for Carrey's considerable talent--not much to quote or remember. Only his genius-boyz from the 'hood were funny.

Forgive me, but pissing all over a bathroom, pissing in a gas tank, flashing a penis in front of a park bench full of women, defacating on a front lawn and sucking on a lactating woman's breast didn't make me laugh. Is this Kaufmann's influence? ANY reaction qualifies as comedy? I get the feeling this picture was constructed by a cluster of sniggering arrested-adolescent males who couldn't give it away if Carrey wasn't in it, and used him to achieve what little success it had. Sucking on the breast of Carrey's success---as it were.

Zellweger is a good actress, and Rhode Island is a beautiful place. That's all I came away with...except that this film makes the Cable Guy look alot more appealing.

Thank god for the GRINCH.

Hi there Burned,
I get your point - still it´s funny. Sometimes the movie crosses the line (as all Farelly creations), but it´s all about the ultimate laugh. I don´t have a problem with it. You shouldn´t either, but decide for yourself....

MM&I

Hey Pet Detective. Agreed. It's all a question of where the lines of tolerance are drawn. Differs with each individual.

Can't fault Carrey's performance though. His usual astonishing level of commitment is evident, and characters are incredibly well-defined.

Just didn't think the film worthy of his talents.

Ok, so some parts are bad, but the rest was simly hilarious. Jim Carrey is so talented, don't tell me u didn't notice it. When he changes from charlie to hank, when he beats himself up, picks himself up, throws himself out of the car and then runs after it.If that's not funny I don't know what is. Jim Carrey u have a gift, don't ever lose it.

THIS MOVIE WAS A GOD

Postby Anarchistic Dog » Tue Mar 27, 2001 7:04 pm

I fail to comprehend how you can even consider bashing this movie. This was Carrey's finest work yet. It was hilarious. The Grinch was terrible, I don't care how much twelve year olds like it.

In MM&I, the characters were well developed, the plot was original, and there was many unexpected, hilarious twists. I mean, really, his wife left him for a black midget, and left him the children. Beautiful!

I must shun you all for not enjoying this movie. Your meaningless opinions should be kept to yourselves. Perhaps you should try viewing the movie again and actually watch it this time...

First of all... LOVED MM&I... however, I don't think it's fair to call the opinions of the people who hated the movie is fair. Everybody is entitled to their own opinion, and we are entitled to ours. Besides, other people's opinions don't make our Jim Carrey experience any less enjoyable.

Anyways, there ya go.

Kelly
Imagine all the people
living life in peace
You may say I'm a dreamer
But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you will join us
And the world will be one
~*~John Lennon~*~

I personally didn't like MM&I as much as Jim's other movies. But it was worth of watching, I think. I'm sure that there's lotsa people who found the movie hilarious and it's great that Jim can fit to so many different characters. For exsample, think about The Mask, Man On The Moon and Truman Show, they're all very different roles for Jim and he has worked it out amazingly .

Suv, Finland

I agree with Burned on the movie: pissing all over a bathroom, pissing in a gas tank, flashing a penis in front of a park bench full of women, defecating on a front lawn and sucking on a lactating woman's breast didn't make me laugh either. It's not that the script wasn't original...or that the characters were So defined, I feel anti social behavior is Not OK. We all know that if Anyone else other than Jim Carrey, like someone on the street in your town, while your trying to have a conversation with a friend, would laugh or enjoy that type of behavior. If you do, then you could be a part of the population that is contributing to the Lac of respect that seems to be so sparse in the world today. I don't condemn those who love that type of comedy, just don't let me catching you do that...Or I'll Spank you vary much!

LoyLou, there's a difference between film and reality.
Do you honestly believe that everyone who enjoyed MM&I would act like Hank or accept that kind of behavior in real life? Think again.
It's all fictional, it's all exaggerated, it's all just a movie, and nothing else.
If someone loves crime movies or action flicks, it doesn't automatically make him a criminal.
I think you can rest assured that moviegoers can distinguish between Hollywood and real world.

<left>Dana, who to most was more a psycho than a therapist

Edited by: Pet Detective at: 4/13/01 12:28:33 am

Dana,
Believe it or not, there is not a lot of difference in films and reality. Everything in that movie was straight from "Real TV". We all know what people do when they don't know their being watched. We also know what people do when they Know they are being filmed, and we know that crimes and antisocial behavior is filmed for thrills every day. I don't feel that those who watch crime or action films are criminals, I do feel that by endorsing it, it does give the weak one's the right and opportunity to act on it. I do know that bad behavior has always existed, just not so excepted.
I grew up in the days when guns and disrespect were not an issue. I am also a mother and I "do" for a living what you "claim" is your hobby. I can't stop people from loving "Stupid", but the world is the way it is because of it. I happen to love a lot of what Jim does, but I know why he does it.
I am looking forward to the "Majestic". I feel this one will be closer to what we have lost, unfortunately there will be a few generations that won't know that. Seen any other Good Movies??

I do see your point, but it's only a small percentage of viewers that are being inspired by movies to antisocial behavior. I'm sure you know the eternal discussion about what was there first, horror/crime/whatever movies/games/magazines or increasing antisocial behavior patterns. I still think the latter is being triggered not by fiction but by multiple problems in people's personal environment. Also what about your mentioned reality tv and news? Much more cruelty and madness is shown here, compared to a comedy like MM&I, and if anything, this is where you should interfere and do something about it. I am aware of the fact that today's tv in general is desensitizing viewers, but this goes mainly for your everyday insanity in the news, especially in the United States.
The bottom line is, there are certainly too many people with antisocial behavior today, but this kind of comedy is not what causes it. You must be disturbed to imitate such actions, and if it wasn't the movie, it was something else. If these kind of movies were being forbidden it wouldn't make the crime rate decrease. It's the individual's personal problems that have to be worked on.
Anyway, this is my personal opinion. May I add that what you "do" also is more than just my hobby.

<left>Dana, who to most was more a psycho than a therapist

Edited by: Pet Detective at: 4/14/01 2:53:44 am

Dana, who to most was more a psycho than a therapist,
I never said MM&I was responsible for the anti social behavior, it indorses it. And buy the way, you are the one who loves the movie, not I! We are from a different generation and you are from the current one
Dana Darling...don't be so defensive to defend stupid behavior. I don't need to be disturbed to dislike pissing, breast sucking and defecating behavior...It's a shame you don't understand that.
Tom Green is famous now...because he has a lot to offer us socially? While he offended people on film...he's the real character Jim was playing in the movie.
I personally preferred Jim in "Living Color". He did get to that line, but at least it showed creativity without banning the show!
Try not to disrespect my opinion because it represents the morals I preserve and you don't defend.
Like I said, it's OK if you, as well as Jim's fans love MM&I. I was agreeing and defending the Gal that made the comment in the first place. So, how bout we let this go and work on making the world a better place!

Eeeek, LoyLo, I think you misunderstood me here, I didn't mean YOU were disturbed!
I was referring to people who imitate bad behavior off movies. Sorry if I came across that way.
Also I did not intend to defend antisocial behavior. Only comedies that make fun of it.

I am sorry if I upset you. Again this was nothing against you, I had only tried to explain my view on this.

<left>Dana, who to most was more a psycho than a therapist
