Jim Carrey's depression.

Hey I need some help from you loverrrrly Jim-niacs!

For a film studies presentation at college, I'm doing it on Jim Carrey's films pre and post his depression as a analytic and comparative study.

Can anyone give me details on his personal trauma, for example when it came about? What treatment he had for it, which roles it helped influence, i.e Joel and Fingerling, etc, etc.

All help would be extremely appreciated as I cannot find any information anywhere else.

To be honest you know as much as we do.......he's a very private man.
He's never really gone into depth about it so your essay would be mostly conjecture with few quotes to back it up........sorry but it will be really dificult for you to do a comparative study with no details or trauma to work with..........is it too late to change the essay title???
perhaps to a comparative study of Jim's comedies and serious movies?

It started when he was 13 and his father lost his job. At age 14 he performed his first stand up at a place called Yuk Yuks. He was booed and pulled off the off the stage. Jim was so traumatised by it that he did not return to stand up for 2 more years. At age 15 He was forced to work with his family at a tire factory to support his family and had to quit school. When the factory job did not work out his family had to live in a van. Jim said he would often try to think of ways he could break the vans brakes. Then his dad sold the van and they lived in a tent in his sisters back yard. after that his dad finally found a job and they were able to live a normal life again but Jim always felt he needed to support them so when he moved out to california and got a role in a tv show called "The Duck Factory" he arranged for his parents to come live with him. But the show only lasted 13 episodes and he went bankrupt so he had to send his them back home to Canada. Jim has also had a hard time with his relationships with women in the past which also contributed to his depression. But he doesn't like to talk about it that too much.


As far as treatment goes Jim said he was on Prozac for and had a psycotrist(sorry I don't know how to spell it). Now he treats it with a supplement. read this thread http://www.jimcarreyonline.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=8348 hope this helps you

I should add that Jims job was scrubbing toilets at the factory

I also should add that when they left their jobs at the factory and had to live in a van the family was more happy then they were before cause the factory job was like a war zone. Jim had to bring a bat with him everyday to work.

well I know that his comedy comes from always trying to make his mom laugh cause she was a hypercondriac and was often layed up in bed with a fake illness

It must have been really hard going......having to grow up too quickly and deal with adult issues which are complicated enough as a grown up, never mind as a kid......
